The Dordrechts Museum has a unique collection of paintings and drawings by Ary Scheffer, born in Dordrecht. He made a career in Paris and is one of the great romantic painters of the 19th century. The later 19th century is strongly represented with famous painters from the Haagse School -Mesdag, Weissenbruch and the brothers Maris – and Amsterdam impressionists such as Breitner and Isaac Israels.
